Though there must have had some extra trick to it beyond that. Even if the Minotaur was no smarter than am average cow, it would be bound to find its way out of a typical maze by just wandering around since it lived there all the time.

It’s unclear where the legend of the labyrinth comes from exactly but there was an actual labyrinth in Egypt however, arguably (more archaeoresearch is needed) it still is there at Fayum but researching and rescuing it from abandonment would hurt the Egyptian irrigation systems, so the authorities discourage even research.
Sure thing. AFAIK “maze” is just an English variant name of Greek (or is Pelasgian? Eteocretan maybe?) “labyrinth”, one related to “amaze”.
Per Wikitionary maze’s definition is “a labyrinth…”
It must be a maze, since a labyrinth would contain David Bowie, and this villain doesn’t have enough flair for that.
