So, honestly, this origin isn’t so far off from actual Marvel characters.
Marvel also had the one-shot parody set in a funny animal verse where Bruce Bunny became the rampaging Hulk courtesy of an experimental gamma-powered video game. Another parody had a teen Hulk who got that way due to overexposure to his dentist gamma ray dental machine (not sure where that came from, other than in one of those super-sized B&W comic lines they sold to kids in grade and middle school).
Sounds much more plausible!
