“Im not trying to be racist, im just a white idiot”
At least she’s willing to learn.
It’s a silly sign that Keith is the sanest of the group
It’s gotta be all that beer he’d been drinking. I always knew that the beer was good for you. XD
I actually sympathize with Bucky. I need things explained to me, too.
Apparently Bucky just needs “thing” explained to her, though.
I’m worse than Bucky then.
Communication is the root of all relationships.
I’m sorry but you have to explain that to me. XD
There’s probably quite a few people who could explain it TO you, but no one can possibly understand it FOR you.
Gaahhh!!! Prepositions! My one weakness!
Well, you know, how space radiation causes stone-like orange skin is hard for most people to understand.
Or how a 10 ft alien can fit in the body of a canine and how its blood scream when burned…
Or how an alien cockroach about a dozen feet long & can rear up to about 9 or 10 feet tall can fit into an Edgar suit…
Extra-spacial folding. They explained it in the book adaptation.
It’s a cockroach? DO they need to explain how it can fit in a suit half it size, I’ve seen them move through holes 1/4 their size. I’m more concerned about how heavy a 10 foot roach would be.
Just don’t ask for explanations on your local China Town on how everyone speaks replacing “R” with an “L”.
Also DO NOT ask why all the look the same to you… EVER!
My wife has face-blindness. Of course all African-American/Chinese/Arabic/Indian people look the same to her. White people all look the same to her, too.
Do you mean that brain disorder where all faces look like lifeless maskes? That must be a creepy thing to get used to. A combination of logic and a focus on the emotional connection to voices would be a good way to compensate.
Errrrrrrr, no. I have no idea what you’re talking about there.
Face blindness just means that it’s difficult to pick out differences between different people’s facial features. Without a very distinct facial feature to lock onto, she has difficulty telling people apart, visually.
It’s a bit distressing for her, every time I trim my beard back from an inch-and-a-half or so down to a quarter-inch. On the very rare occasion that I just shave completely, it really creeps her out for a few days, until she adjusts. She identifies people by features like that, voice, and movement, such as walking patterns.
It’s particularly bad with Hollywood types, who tend towards neutral, even features, since that’s what people tend to find the most attractive. She couldn’t tell the difference between Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, no matter how hard she tried.
I forget the name of the disorder, but there is a part of the human brain that specializes on distinguishing and remembering faces, as well as cross connecting certain special faces or special expressions with certain emotions, such as a Loved one or a subtle, suggestive look. There are cases of people born with healthy brains who could emotionally/socially recognize faces their whole lives but then suffered specific damage to that part of the brain, from something like a stroke or a blow to that part of the head. Afterward, upon seeing people in general & friends and family in particular, from that point on, every person SEEMS to have a lifeless mask for a face. They may look and move like a real face and be incredibly detailed, and even have the right voice, but the victim simply can’t see the humanity distinct in any face anymore. They remember what that was like, and it just isn’t there, visually, anymore. “That’s not my mother, that’s some stranger wearing a mask that looks like her!”, said one man just hours after waking up in the ER following an accident. The confusion made him paranoid and rude for many months before the doctors figured it out. Your wife’s condition seemed to have some parallels.
I certainly hope you didn’t just wreck, like, everything, Bucky…
Things not thing.
Poor Thing from Addams Family
“Thing’s nothing.” Took me a while to get that…..
How could you Alex? That’s very insensitive.
In Eva’s defence, there is often not a pressing need to introduce one’s significant other to one’s actual sibling(s), so “sista”, which might equate to “close friend”, would seem like a real possibility.
I’d forgotten that we’d already seen Alex’s sister-
I actually had a similar situation when I met my next-door neighbor’s African-American girlfriend. The woman identified my neighbor as her girlfriend.
African-Americans seem more likely to call random female friends “girlfriends,” so I wasn’t sure, at first. Nope, they’re girlfriend girlfriends.
Not even necessarily a black thing; I’ve often heard white women use the term girlfriend to refer to a close, but Platonic, friend. Then again, people talk funny where I’m from.
Context (I am white my ex gf was black)
There are times when the kind of question buckaress asks is entirely valid. Sometimes black culture really is as confusing and skewed as the stereotypes would have you believe. I met my exes sisters, and “sistas.”
Yes there really is an entirely different language gap between ethnicities. Yes its idiotic, but thems the facts.
Try to explain a Caucasian why he must not call every latino guy “compadre”.
Cause they ain’t friends with every latino guy.
Fyi, if someone from the Boston metro area calls you “pal” get ready to defend yourself. NYC it’s “my friend” as in “you’re in the way my friend”. Usually said by a Guido to one of smaller stature and unarmed.
Next strip: Eva will ask if her sister is as hot as her, following by some comment regarding if she likes threesomes.
Video, or it didn’t happen.
Ok, we have an insensitive, dismissive comment, lasagna and the beginning of a catfight. I wonder if this comic had a 4th panel would have one of them saying something regarding how they dislike the day this comic was posted…
That’s supposed to be lasagna? Looks more like Welsh Rarebit.
The only thing “wrong with her” in this context is she’s not a mind reader.
Well, at least the neckline of that dress will buy Eva a bit of forgiveness.
*is still staring* Hmm..what’s that? Did you say something?
Probably nothing more important than what was distracting you.
Weird. I mean, I never thought Buckaress was white. Not completely black but Latino at least, maybe even mixed. But just white? Don’t see it. Weird.
White, like all ethnic skin types, covers a variety of shades, and can be further augmented by different intensities of UV absorption and skin creams.
I know someone in my city who visits his Italian relatives a few times a year for reunions and holidays. He says with a serious look on his face, that when you walk into the room it’s hard not to notice him. His pasty white Italian self sticks out like a neon light.
Genetic would fall under the ‘variety of shades’ category, not the ‘augmetation’ category.
Isn’t she a redhead? It doesn’t get much whiter than that, except for the freckles.
She’s white, only that she has a nice tan.
What kind of protection against the Sun did you expect from her previous costume?
She might have nipple pads in the top, to prevent pop-up when it’s cold. Those might provide some sun protection, if the actual material of the outfit let’s through UV.
Or have the costume made up of ballistic cloth of some sort with padding underneath to prevent chafing.
Considering that it was originally an old Halloween costume of the Evil Savant, I doubt that it was made out of ballistic cloth.
Red hair is definitely not an exclusively white thing. Natural redheads show up in many ethnic groups, from Japan to India to Africa. Granted, most of these tend to be fairly dark auburn reds, while bright, coppery red is pretty much limited to those of norther European extraction. Eva’s combination of fairly light hair and relatively dark skin is a little unusual, but probably not impossible. Her family tree might be really interesting, though.
Fun redhead facts: The US has the most natural redheads of any country, while Ireland has the most per capita.
What’s wrong with YOU, believing that there’s something wrong with HER because she didn’t understand exactly what you meant? What are you, some kind of racist?
Uhhhhhh, that’s not how racism works, man.
Racism works exactly however someone happens to say it does.
Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh. What?
So, if someone says that treating African-Americans the same as white people, in your personal relationships, is racist, then that’s how racism works? So, the KKK is a racially-tolerant, progressive organization, because they say they are?
Are you insane? Words have commonly accepted meanings, man.
Just checked the Casts page and I have a question. How come Distracterella (and the others) isn’t in there?
Because the authors have only put heroes and their primary associates, not villains, probably.
Possibly it might have something to do with how often they appear, or how recently. The Spank, who is more a running joke than an actual character but who has appeared a few times, is there. Dear Distracterella appeared often early on, but not for some time IIRC.
