Ahahahahahahahahahahah. I love it, I used to read those all the time in the school library.
For those of you who don’t get the reference, those are Asterix and Oberlix form the Asterix series. Two Gauls from a village on the northern coast of Gaul which continues to hold out against the Romans (who have taken over the rest Gaul) thanks to a magic potion brewed by their Druid, which makes them super strong and invincible.
It’s a nice day when I don’t get a reference and it doesn’t make me feel old. Heh – mind you, I probably stopped reading comics before these guys turned up or something but I’m going to just not look it up and assume I’m too young.
I grew up with the “Asterix and Obelix” animated movies, though most of them came out a loooong time before I was born (first, “Asterix the Gaul” came out in 1967 – and I’m from the 90ies.
Maybe you don’t know them because they’re/were more known and shown on TV in Europe (since it’s a French comic)?
You can’t be that old, Krumm. You can be too young or not sufficiently affected by European culture (I don’t think they were known beyond some circles in the USA decades ago).
Astérix et Obélix un classique. I am enjoyably suprise a french comic is reference here. I thought nobody in the US heard of those except for movies like Tintin.
Astérix et Obélix! Par Toutatis! And César on top of it!
What a pleasure to find all of them in Shitropolis ! :)
(Oh, isn’t Astérix a little too pale of skin? I hope he didn’t eat a fish that wasn’t fresh… :P )
Haven’t you listened to Unhygenix? All of his fish was certified fresh when it got to the wholesaler in Paris before it was shipped to him over a distance of several hundred miles by oxcart.
Does this mean that Iznogoud is working in the Mayor’s office? I don’t think Mayor Kurgh is stupid enough to put up with an obviously treacherous staffer for long – unless he finds the ineptitude of the treachery amusing.

–> True!! I savor his statement even more, coming from a fish seller whose village lies on the coast :)
Not to mention that he even has a boat, but seldom fish next to the village, since he states that those fishes have not the same quality as the ones he sells.
I wonder if his fishes were popular among the Normans, since they love fermented fish…
Well, he’s not certified to declare his fish fresh, so in order to sell locally caught fish, he’d have to have the fish shipped to Paris to be inspected and then shipped back before he could sell it.
This is brilliant, pretty much the best comic strip for me so far, admit i’m surprised that there is lack of subtleness towards to which superhero it’s a reference to but that doesn’t matter as this is brilliant (again!)
Here’s a factoid I learned from Mary Beard’s excellent SPQR: in each of the Asterix books, one of the characters will say to the other: “These Romans are crazy.” (“Ils sont fous ces romains” in French).
However, in the Italian translation, it is rendered Sono Pazzi Questi Romani – the same initials as SPQR – Senatus Populus que Romanus – an excellent pun.
One of the things that made Asterix catch on outside of France was the fact that not only did the translators translate the dialogue, they also translated the jokes so that they’d make sense in their new languages.
I remember a time where a comic like this would get you into a legal battle that ruined a couple of comic artists back then. Uderzo would unleash the lawyers on anybody daring to copy his style or figures. He even went against a german tribute album.
Sweet. My family lived in Europe for some years when I was a kid and I ran into Asterix & Obelix in the excellent British translation: definitely feeling the nostalgia right now.
Ah, now there’s a reference that makes me feel old.
Ah now there’s a classic you don’t see referenced often, I love it.

Not to mention Caesar himself.
I didn’t even notice the guy’s resemblance to Caesar until I saw the last panel and realized the whole strip is an homage to Asterix.

Asterix and Obelix. And they got a few movies too. Even a few life action ones jsut this milennium.
They started out on 1959.
You’re welcome.

I’m a 20 yo Australian and I get the reference. I’d say its known around the world a bit it’s just an old series.
27 year old Australian, and as I said above, they were in our school library when I was in secondary.
I’m in the U.S. 21 years old. I love Asterix. <3
Mexican here, 46 yo. Read all the books, starting from early 80’s.
Actually this is one of the strips that made laugh in awhile.
32 year old Brit and I grew up reading the English translations of the Asterix and Obelix books. They taught me a lot, actually.
Those comics were my childhood. Asterix and Obelix, Tintin, Spirou and Fantasio, the Marsupilami, Lucky Luke.
I only saw the name of the construction company (and noticed the style of nose on the bad guy) when I read the strip again.
Thanks for mentioning because I totally missed those clues. XD
Finally! A reference I understand! And I love it!
OK, this is the best comic ever. The internet is no longer needed, we’ve peaked.
Astérix et Obélix! Par Toutatis! And César on top of it!

Someone argues about freshness of fish, a fight breaks out.
Unhygenix: That’s not true!
Fulliautomatix: It wouldn’t happen if the fish was fresh.
(Unhygenix hits Fulliautomatix in the face with a fish)
(Another fight breaks out)

Batterix not Included.
For all my love of cameos from other comics… this one takes the prize! :D
… now, excuse me, I am long due a readup on my Asterix comics.. :)
Alternate title:
“The Unmitigated Gaul of Some People”
Dammit, you beat me to the line. ;)
This put a smile on my old face thanks.
i’m from Israel and not only did i grow up on those comics i grow up on the translated versions.
I want the same as the little and the f…, erm “strong” guy.
Ha. My French course at uni has just started studying Asterix and Obelix

Uderzo’s been dead for longer than I’ve been alive.
And Goscinny retired a few years back.
Other way around.
I’m expecting these two to have superpowers thanks to some homemade meth cooked by an old pusher with a ridiculously long white beard.
your thinking of Getafix, and he never forced his potion on anyone, as for crystal meth, I think he’ll just cook it let word of mouth do the rest
although, his meth does make you think the sky’s falling on your head
Great, now I’m imagining Getafix in Walter White’s hat and sunglasses.
“Dogmatix, we have to cook!”
Well, that’s where the English version of his name came from:
Get A Fix.
Very clever homage to Goscinny/Uderzo.

Hijinks will no doubt ensue.
no problem just tell Unhygenix that Fulliautomatix says his fish stink, that should get rid of the block
“‘Eminent Domain’ and all they do is laugh!”
I just finished watched the new Asterix and the Mansions of the Gods movie earlier today. Its a sign I need to dig out my old comics
Oh I loved reading those comics! And the animated movies! Great childhood memories.
Man I need to see were I can buy some.
Rather reassuring to find a joke on a webcomic that’s older than I am…
Now we just need a reporter with a rat terrier and a ducktail haircut…
