To be fair, it wasn’t until Tolkien that the notion of elves being some human-sized thing gained any traction. The comic is just playing with the discrepancies between modern fantasy literature and historical folkoristic/mythological sources.
Aelf was in norse myth names given to dwarves ….
Elves as in “Älvor” is in nordic Folklore (not myth) anything from short, slender humans to faeries.
The nordic folklore versions of hill- and mountain-people frequently (known as “Vitter people” ) was, unlike the british-irish ones actually of varying size, and could even be larger than humans. (Not giants, though.)
Kind of depends the term is either used for the larger group of human-like supernatural beings but Elf also often appears in folklore as a specific word for a human sized being that is often supernaturally beautiful, with some set of gimmicks often involving dancing.
117,649 possibilities if we’re going by traditional 7-note Western scale, 2,985,984 possibilities from the modern Chromatic scale (think piano), or only 139,314,069,504 possibilities if they use the 72-note Indian scale.
I mean if it’s a music app then it probably doesn’t need any service to function. Also they haven’t been here THAT long so it probably still has some battery life.
It’s true. When a mobile device isn’t continually communicating on a network, it uses a lot less energy.
In the radio communications industry, devices are given a TRS rating, which is to say the how long a full charge lasts when used solely to Transmit, to Receive, or on Standby (e.g. 10/20/50 hrs).
So, a mobile device on a network is actively communicating, and therefore is transmitting and receiving, while a mobile not on a network is passively communicating, i.e. not transmitting, but still receiving. A mobile that is switched off is in standby.
Of course, these ratings are only the ideal durations and when it comes to smart phones, there are other factors (such as the OS, any running apps, screen brightness, speaker volume, etc.) which can reduce those values considerably.
But if there is no service, the mobile will frequently send at full energy in order to reach an antenna. Best battery life is near an antenna but idle.
I’m kinda surprised that somebody doesn’t pull out their 3DS and tries playing songs on the Ocarina (or Majora’s Mask transformations). You know, songs like “Take On Me”, “Star Wars Cantina”, “My Heart Will Go On”, “Concerning Hobbits”…
I mean… it’s magic… it’s supposed to be bullshit in 90% cases
yeah, really thought that was a given lol
Any science that is sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic.
Any magic system, sufficiently hard, is indistinguishable from science.
Most of the comic is set in a city called Shitropolis. Why does “bullshit” get censored?
Magic worlds can be weird.
* So far fairies are elves and there is no swearing.

Nope. Elves have always been human sized, and wingless in Norse mythology. That’s where Tolkien got them from.
Not that simple. Elves, and other creatures, in norse mythology have been quite diverse in size and form – and alignment.

I wonder if there’s a TV Trope’s “Our Elves are different” topic.
Nope… I’m not going near that time-eating black hole.
There is an “Our elves are better” if I remember right, about elves being better than you me and other elves.
Because it is pronounced “shi-tropolis”, not “shit-ropolis”. ;)
Well I mean, how hard can it be to figure out the right sequence, there’s only

Except that there’s way more than 7 (or 12) notes, because the notes extend way beyond a single scale.
Plus, there’s also chords, which can increase the number of possibilities geometrically.
Que playing ‘Song Of Storms’ and the inevitable flooding that comes with it
Why is GG’s phone still working in a land that runs on magic, apart from sheer Rule of Funny?

*infrequently.
The mobile will send an “are you there?” signal much less frequently than it sends “I’m still here!” signals to a contacted antenna.
Funny, I wonder where did my comment about this specific situation in the previous comic went… The authors are censoring us! That’s BULLSHIT!
Oh man, the “” tag is not working. Sorry everyone!
Grrr… I meant the “” tag. Dang WordPress, I never know which HTML tags are available for comment. Sorry again.
Gosh darn it! Last try: The “strike” tag. “”””
Yep < and > are not available for comments…
I wonder if they are going to try with the “Shave and a Haircut” and “two bits” notes…
LOL. In this weird world that just might work!
It’ll take them to the town barber. Meanwhile, Mahna Mahna will summon little pink creatures as a backup chorus.
No. But only because that’s 7 notes, not 6.
Close Encounters is only 5 notes, so that doesn’t work either.
I know the 5 note theme, but that just takes you to John Williams house

What? You can play those on Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goMixt-6fEs
Nokia phone + 24hr Internet Lab at college = so much time wasted “composing” popular tracks as ringtones.
Only 5 notes in the Vodafone ringtone!
And three, there’s no such thing as jet-powered rocket pants outside the fictional serial “Robbie Rocketpants”.
