She did pay Eva/Buckaress a perfectly decent compliment before her oh-so-subtle display of the wedding ring.
@timma, She pretended to be nice, then gave what is known as a “left-handed compliment”. It sounds halfway decent on the surface but is actually a double insult (the double part because of the “I’m so much smarter than you, that you might not even realize I’m insulting you” assumption).
At last, Buckaress’ name revealed!
@timma, the insult is both that Josie is getting married to a guy who can afford that wedding ring and that Eva is a slut.
Have to admit it take other posts for me to get the full extent what Josie intended is ‘left handed compliment’ regarded as sarcasm? I assume it is though the flaw with sarcasm is that if nobody gets your being sarcastic (or just don’t care) then it falls flat on it’s face. Though looking at this now it’s very subtle.
No, a backhanded or left handed compliment is not sarcasm. It is an insult hidden within what appears to be a compliment.
Old school southern women were known for this as are frenemies. Done correctly the insults are just accidently there and any angry response makes you look rude and bad.
Josie’s compliment – Eva, still stunning.
Semi-compliment – still the heartbreaker (compliment – guys still fall for her, insult – she tosses guys aside which is callous)
Insult – still no man to tie you down (Can’t get married or find a guy worth marrying.
Combined with the heartbreaker comment implies she (Eva is/was kind of a slut).
Showing off the ring as part of a hand talking gesture – insult (Well I found a guy who is worth marrying and has money).
The point is to have many knives behind the cloak.
Love the art for this story. Buckaress’ slight lean backwards in the first panel is great, looks really natural. She’s always been… eye-catching, but these strips have shown you can draw her quite attractively without depending only on costume.
@Timma: Those links(You’re talking about the 6 captioned pictures, right?) have always been there, I thought.
@Ourorboros: Her name was used in her introduction in the 40th episode.
You have a giant popup add that displays as a 404 that covers the entire comic. Comes up each time you move forward or back through the story.
